DUTIES: Incumbent is responsible or planning, initiating, and conducting
physiological, genetic, biochemical investigations and manipulations
the biosynthetic pathways of naturally-occurring secondary products with
pesticidal properties. The objectives and associate approaches of
the incumbent's personal research are: (1) determination and identification
of genes and genes products involved in the biosynthesis of natural
products involved in plant protection against pests; (2) genes encoding
pivotal enzymes in natural product biosynthesis will be cloned and
manipulated with different promoters and other regulatory sequences to
generate plant cells or tissues with enhanced gene expression for
production of plant protection chemicals; and (3) transformation of plant
cells with rDNA encoding genes of interest and regeneration of plants
from transformed cell cultures.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must successful completion of a full 4-year
course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in
biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry,
or molecular biology. In addition, applicants must have 1 year of
specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or a Ph.D. or
equivalent doctoral degree as described above which demonstrated:

1.    Knowledge of plant biochemistry and plant molecular biology related
to synthesis of natural products.

2.    Knowledge of plant cell and tissue cultures and rDNA technology.

3.    Skill in the manipulation of the enzymes of plant biosynthetic
pathways by genetic engineering.

4.    Ability to independently design, plan, conduct research and publish
results in refereed journals.
