We will hold our next Plant Bioinformatics Workshop at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, MD from July 23-25, 2012 (Monday through Wednesday).
The workshop is intended for individuals with little or no background in bioinformatics. It will cover all aspects of the bioinformatics processes and analyses used to sequence, assemble, annotate and analyze a plant genome using the Medicago truncatula genome as a model with hands-on experience wherever possible.
Topics to be covered include genome sequencing and assembly (both Sanger and extensive NexGen data), structural and functional gene annotation using both ab initio predictions and experimental evidence including RNA-seq data, databases and data management, gene viewers and editors, repeat detection and classification, paralogous families, small RNAs and detection and applications of synteny. A number of these talks will be presented by domain experts from remote locations using the WebEx Conference system. The final day will include in-person guest lectures on the Medicago Hap-Map project, the Legume Information System and the construction of gene regulatory networks.
The workshop is supported by an NSF Plant Genome grant that will cover all expenses of US participants, including travel.
Applications should be sent to mtruncatula from jcvi.org with the following details: Applicant's family name and the word WORKSHOP in the subject line, a statement of research interests and, in the case of graduate students and post-docs, a letter of support from their mentor that can be sent separately.
Attendance will be limited to 20 people and it may be necessary to limit the number of participants from any one research group.
Screening of applicants will begin on June 1st and should be complete by June 15, at which time individuals will be contacted to make travel arrangements. It is expected that participants will arrive on Sunday July 22 and leave either in the evening of Wednesday July 25 or the morning of July 26.
We also plan to make the entire workshop accessible via the internet using WebEx to allow participation by individuals who are unable to attend in person. Details will be available later.
