The number of nucleotides in the EMBL Database has now passed the
6,000,000,000
mark (6 Gigabases represented in nearly 6 million database entries).

Sequence data submissions are received from individual submitters and
from a growing
number of major genome sequencing centres constituting the major data
source.

Over the last 5 months (compare Oct 1, 1999: 3.6 Gigabases from 4.7
million entries),
the database size has increased by more than 65%.
