Finally! I've found a place to communicate my problem to the experts in
emfs! I am an RN and I work in public health. Ten years ago I was in an
auto accident and fractured cervical vertebraes 5-6 resulting in
quadraplegia and partial cord severage. Following a spinal fusion in the
C5-6 area (utilizing metal wires and screws) I was able to rehabilitate
over a few years to 80% normalicy. Three years ago I began experiencing
problems when using a computer. These problems include loss of functioning
in the most damaged areas of the right arm, hand, and leg, and bowel
functioning. The loss would reverse after staying away from the computer
for a few days. My docs at the University of Michigan had no answer for the
loss of function or it's return. I could attribute it to my computer by
trial and error. Then I started using a cell phone and the exact problems
returned only quicker and more intense. The loss of functioning could be
felt after a 5 minute conversation, but again, reversed back after a day or
so. I limit my time spent on both the computer and cell phone.
Recently, they upgraded the computers where I work and formed a
multi-county network system. I find I cannot even be in the room for very
long when someone is on the network. I feel a constriction in my neck with
the resulting problems above. My theory is that the metal (and I don't know
exactly what was used) in my neck expands the emf or draws it into the area
of the fusion and irritates the nerves leading to the right side of my
body. I'm really not crazy!!
I am not knowledgeable as to what type of energy is used by these gadgets,
nor do I know if they use the same source. I only know what I feel inside
when I am exposed to computers, cell phones, and on-line servers and I know
how long my body takes to rid of the effects. My right hand will actually
go into a "claw" position during this experience. If any of you emf
geniuses have ever heard anything remotely similar, please contact me. I
need more information and would greatly appreciate it if someone would
respond by email bbell@portup.com or phone 800-562-4832 ex. 340.

My sincere thanks.

Barbara Bell

Hello Barbara,

I'm not a physician, but a phycicist. Any piece of metal will function
like an antenna, if its length is not negligibly small compared to the
wavelength of an electromagnetic field. This means, that it will
produce a small voltage along its length. Normally only some
microvolts but up to millivolts if near to a transmitter. If this
occurs near some nerves, these could be stimulated mildly, possibly
resulting in irritation or fatigue.

To shield against electromagnetic fields, you could try to wear some
garment with woven in steel fibres. This special type of garment is
commercially used to shield rooms near powerful transmitters by making
curtains from it and also special protective suits for powerline
workers are available. Maybe wearing a shawl from that material might
help you. However I do not know a distributor.

Greetings Harald

The inquiry by Ms. Bell is intriguing and if the observations are
valid may re-awaken the issue of individual sensitities to EMF fields. The
suggestion by Harald Hick that the metal implants are acting as antennae in
some way is equally interesting, but I think does not quite explain effects
in the leg and bowel from C5-6, unless the CNS is involved. Many of the
symptoms may be mechanical in origin due to positions in those activities.
In any case, it would be interesting to see the x-ray of the
implant. Could Ms. Bell scan one in to JPEG or GIF files and send them to
the EMF-bionet (if allowed and she authorizes it)?

The problem voiced by B Bell (emf and spinal cord injury) may be related to
the phenomenon of electrical hypersensitivity, a sort of allergic response
to things electric or electromagnetic. When I first heard of this array of
symptoms from a very respected Swedish scientist a few years ago I was
highly skeptical. However, after attending a meeting devoted entirely to
such cases, it became clear that this may actually represent a fascinating
bioelectromagnetic phenomenon.

Dr William Rea of Dallas has a practice devoted exclusively to such
patients. He has pointed out that just as with chemical allergenic
substances, patients exhibit a range of responses, from mild to
life-threatening.

Individuals claiming to be so affected do not necessarily have implanted
metallic materials. However, it is conceivable that the internal presence
of conducting materials may contribute to the overall problem.

A network of such people currently exists in the US; I have communicated
this information to Ms Bell.

For all of you who responded to my request, I thank you and will keep in
touch. I am agreeable to release x-rays or participate in research into the
whys of this experience. I live in northern Michigan but surgery, rehab,
docs are at Univ of Mich in Ann Arbor.
Again, thanks.
B Bell
