Postdoctoral Position available to investigate host-pathogen
interaction using Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection of neutrophils
as a model. Studies include (1) signal transduction in neutrophils,
(2) the role of AnkA in the inhibition of the neutrophil respiratory
burst (3) the mechanism resulting in the delay of apoptosis in
neutrophils infected with Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

We are studying the basic molecular mechanisms involved in the
survival of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in neutrophils. This organism is
unusual because it is the only human pathogen that survives in
neutrophils. AnkA is a bacterial virulence factor that is translocated
by a type four secretion system (TFSS) into the neutrophil. After
translocation AnkA is phosphorylated on tyrosines by Src kinases,
allowing it to interact with SH2-domain-containing host proteins. We
intend to determine what signaling pathways are affected by AnkA, and
its role in the inhibition of the respiratory burst and the delay of
apoptosis.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Microbiology/
Immunology or M.D. degree, experience in the study of cell signaling/
phagocyte biology, a strong publication track record, and be highly
motivated. The lab is located in a state of the art research facility
with new equipment and an excellent educational environment.
