Two post-doctoral positions are available immediately for candidates with
either a PhD or MD degree with a strong background/experience in immunology,
microbiology or virology. Our laboratory focuses on innate immunology to
fungal, viral and parasitic pathogens.
The first position is for a research project to define the innate immune
pathways critical for host defense against Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV),
an under-studied Category A pathogen. We will model early immune events in
the two most common modes of human viral exposure; mucosal and systemic. In
semi-arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, natural epizootics of
RVFV occur every ~8 years among wildlife and domestic animals. These
outbreaks are associated with high mortality among affected livestock, and
are usually associated with simultaneous epidemics of RVFV-associated human
disease. In such settings, transmission to humans occurs either by insect
bite or more likely, aerosol inhalation and mucosal exposure, which occurs
during handling of infected animals. Applicants with previous virology and
animal handling experience will be given preference. Excellent written and
spoken English skills are required.
The second position will focus on a project to define the molecular
mechanisms of IL-1β upregulation and processing in response to Candida
albicans, utilizing in vitro studies as well as a murine model of
oropharyngeal candidiasis. We will examine the role of NLRs and other
innate receptors in fungal immunity. Applicants with previous mycology or
immunology and animal handling experience will be given preference.
Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.
