It appears that virtually the full GFP coding sequence is required
to get a fluorescent protein. If more than a few amino-acids are
removed from either end of the GFP gene, the resulting protein is
non-fluorescent. To my knowledge, no-one has made a significantly
smaller GFP that fluoresces, much less a fluorescent peptide.
