Where have you been for the last year? The vast majority of postings to
this group ( fluorpro at net.bio.net ) concern GFP, the abbreviation for
green fluorescent protein? It's an incredible little protein first
described in jellyfish. Under the right cytoplasmic environment, the
protein undergoes a rearrangment which generates a fluorescent chromaphore
which emits in the yellowish-green. Artificial mutations in this protein
have been described which increase its fluorescent yield, shift its
emission spectrum, etc. In recombinant constructs the GFP open reading
frame (ORF) can be fused to a variety of other proteins to change its
subcellular distribution and thus follow various and sundry movements
within a cell, etc.
