Excitation efficiency of DsRed should still be 30-40% at 488nm. So if
you can't see anything at that wavelength, it means that you would at
best get a very bad S/N when exciting at the optimal wavelength. Is
your emission filter (and dichroic mirror, in case there is one in
the system) suitable for DsRed?
