Of course, you are correct, and looking at the information on quantum
yield of the two proteins easily confirms this. I just realized that
I was comparing the visible expression of DsRed vs. GFP(LVA); not a very
fair comparison at all! (and photon for photon, GFP will appear another
6 times or so as bright given the properites of the human eye.) My
mistake.
