Fwd: Mercury arc vapor lamp exploding?

Does it really explode without warning? I thought the cause for the
bulb to explode was an oberheating due to a too high power
dissipation in the lamp (caused by an increase in current due to
wear of the electrodes). And I believed that the lamp would start
to flicker then because of an instable arc when this happens.

Our bulb here now has some 290 hours on its back, but doesn't show
any flicker yet. So I should change it anyway, just in case?
