Look up the two novels by Carl Djerassi. One is called "Cantor's Dilemma",
I'm not sure about the second. They are not murder mysteries but very
interesting in how they deal with the laboratory. Djerassi was a professor
of chemistry at Stanford and instrumental in the development of "The Pill".
