Recent paper by J-P. Aubry et al in Nature (August 6,92) shows that CD23 is a l
igand for CD21 on B cells. If CD23 on Follicular dendritic cells binds CD21 and
rescues germnal center B cells from apoptosis this may negate possible selecti
on against low affinity somatic mutants. Such a selection was a possible functi
on for rescue of germinal center B cells by anti-IgM or antigen. Does anyone kn
ow if an antigen related signal is importnat for CD23 mediated rescue?
