APOPTOSIS !

Dear Netters,
We are organising a Group Discussion on Programmed Cell Death, here in
the Tata Instt. of Fundamental Research in Bombay ; India. Since nobody here
actually works on Apoptosis of any kind, our preparatory to the G.D has
put us up against quite a few double-edged questions (.. unanswered, atleast
in the papers that we have seen..) which we hope some of you may be able
to help us out with !
One question that we have been arguing quite a lot about is the definition
of Programmed Cell death itself ! Is there any solid reason to believe that
there is any OTHER kind of "normal" cell death (excluding necrosis) ?
Another aspect we'd like clarification about is the manner of disposal of
apoptic bodies after engulfment. Are they degraded via the normal phagosomal
pathway ? Or is there some sort of a "re-cycling" of the organelles, without
actual degradation ?
Though we understand that that it is a debatable issue, I would also like
your opinions on whether phagocytosis of these apoptic bodies are receptor
mediated & how lipid assymetry may actually help in the process.

P.S. The G.D here, is on 23-April. Any suggestions to make it an
exciting session are welcome, too !

Thanking you,

Nevil J.S
