I have tended to avoid kits myself too. I especially feel that they're a bad
idea for grad students who are trying to learn the procedures and gain an
understanding of what's going on. On the other hand, I'll bet ANY kit would
cost much less than your monthly salary. If buying a kit can save you months
of unproductive work, it's well worth the price. Sometimes it's more cost
effective to swallow your pride and buy the kit.
