Much of the work in this area has been done by Neal Blumberg and Joanna
Heal at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. I would start
with their paper in Transplant Proceedings 1988;20:1138-42. In addition,
their chapter on transfusion-associated immunomodulation in Anderson and
Ness: Scientific Basis of Transfusion Medicine is an excellent review of
the current status of the field.
