The microplate concept was well known in the 60s. In my native country,
Hungary, these microplates ( and micro-dilutors) were developed by 
dr. Takatsy of the Public Health Institute for serobacetriology and viral
work. These were more like plexiglas plates though, and not polystyrene
plates.
