In July, to coincide with the International Congress of Immunology in San
Francisco, we have produced a special issue in which key research leaders have
put the diverse field which comprise modern immunology into perspective. What
were the paradigms which defined each field at the time of the 8th
International Congress of Immunology in Budapest three years ago? What are the
most important issues that have been resolved in the intervening three years
and what new questions will form the focus for discussion in San Francisco?
For those unable (or unwilling) to attend the Congress these reviews will
still provide a much needed perspective on the complex world of immune
research over the last three years.

To enable a quick digest of each review area, we have asked the authors to
identify the key points of progress since 1992 and the key papers in which
these major observations were elucidated: these are highlighted in boxes
within each article.

Naturally, there have been tremendous advances in many areas over the past
three years and space constraints have precluded publication of an exhaustive
catalogue. Similarly, within each article a number of important experiments
could not be discussed. On behalf of each authors we therefore ask for the
understanding of the many researchers whose work is not mentioned or cited in
this special issue.
