I have successfully infected (in fact, both acutely and chronically) a 293
clone in which I transfected a CD4 expression vector. 293 cells are
derived from human embryonic epithelial kidney cells transformed with
adeno. The parental line is not infectable with HIV; the CD4+ line is
productively infectable. (BTW, 293 is a somewhat unusual cell line, in
that it can be transiently transfected to >70% efficiency, and is
remarkably hardy...). BTW, the infection did not seem to kill the cells.
I have not tried with other cell lines.
