Hello to all of you, I am a student at Simon Fraser University in
British Columbia, Canada. I have been "lurking" in some of the medical
topics groups as I am conducting some research on immune system
conditions. My particular interest is in dream content and sleep
patterns. In the meantime, with five other students at the university,
we are doing a project on internet communities. My section on
"internet communities" involves how people with medical issues are using
the internet to communicate. If any of you are interested, my
preliminary c.v. page is located at:
http://edie.cprost.sfu.ca/~coho/reesor/cv.html
and is linked to the main page of our group. I will post the final
address for the group project as soon as it is done (this will be in the
next week). I am looking to get some of your thoughts on the following
questions. Feel free to answer in whatever capacity suits you, short
or long to one or even more of the questions. You can respond if you
like to this message here in the USENET group or by e-mailing any of
your thoughts to me at:
reesor at sfu.ca
If you e-mail me, please let me know which group you are responding
from. O.K. here goes!
Internet connectivity has enabled many of us to share (via: USENET,
mailinglists, WWW etc.) pertinent info regarding our common interests.
This USENET group is one such example.
1) Do you feel that the USENET group is being used as a true
disseminator of pertinent and useful information?
2) Are geographically disparate activist-users forming coalitions that
act on certain issues concurrently and (to the extent possible)
uniformly?
3) Do you feel that the Internet can create solidarity in thought and
action on your issue of interest?
4) Do you feel a true sense of community here in cyberspace?
5) Do any of you "carry" the information you have learned from the
"net" out to your local community support groups to let them know
what is happening elsewhere?
6) Have you ever conducted a rally or initiative via electronic
communication or have you considered doing so?
7) Have any of you considered electronic pressure being applied to
civic, state, provincial and/or federal authorities in a concerted
fashion?
8) Also, if you are a medical researcher I'm interested in what you
think of the net as a tool for communication and research. Does it
help you with those you are working with that have medical
conditions?
Thank you for your time and consideration and looking forward to hearing
your thoughts,
Johnston Reesor
