platinum wire in blotting

Does anyone know if it is critical to use platinum wire in 
electrophoresis?  If it is, why?  (Why not copper or stainless steel or 
something else?) To replace the wire from BioRad the price is $1.58 per 
INCH.  Does anyone know of a less expensive source?
