Having responded privately semi-facetiously before, I suddenly remember
(from long ago, in my parasitology days) seeing nucleated erythrocytes in
adult mice during prolonged infection with malaria parasite (Plasmodium
berghei) , when destruction of rbcs was rampant and consequent rapid
recruitment of new end cells would have been crucial to continued
survival. Of course, I realise this is still not an answer to the
question, viz. 'normally'.
