Position Description
Title: Research Assistant B Benefits: API
Department: Microbiology Position: ######
Reports to: Principal Investigator
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Biology or Chemistry with
courses
for Employment: in Molecular Biology and/or Immunology, and 2 to 3
years of relevant experience; or the equivalent.
Other Requirements: Comprehension of the following subject matter
area(s):
tissue culture, biochemistry, or molecular biology.
Competence in the following laboratory methods, procedures and
techniques and equipment/instruments associated with them: cell
culture, centrifugation,
molecular cloning, flow cytometry, Western blot, and PCR.
Ability to work independently, with good work organization and
time management skills, skilled hands, and good judgment. Computer
literacy. Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous
materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials,
and/or hazardous chemicals.
Definition: Participates in research investigations in the area of
Class II immunobiology antigen presentation and signal
transduction. Designs and executes experiments. Analyzes and
reports findings. Provides technical guidance to others working in
the laboratory.
Typical Examples of Work Performed:
1. Designs experiments which implement the research approach. Sets up
and monitors experiments in progress, identifying, troubleshooting and
correcting or recommending solutions to problems associated with
experimental design; methods, procedures and techniques; or equipment
and facilities. As necessary, develops and implements new or modified
research methods, procedures and techniques to meet the unique
requirements of assigned research problems. 30%
2. Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation.
Presents findings with tentative conclusions to the principal
investigator. Prepares appropriate and understandable representations
of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc. Prepares drafts of
reports, summaries, manuscripts, etc. or sections thereof , e.g.,
Methods and Materials, abstracts, etc. to communicate results and
implications of the research. 60%
3. Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
Provides technical guidance and advice as required. 5%
4. Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to
the research. 5%
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
