I would cite it as "it has been rumored in the scientific society" or "A posting on the bionet.immunology newsgroup purported to be by Teresa Binstock" Or in other words: IMHO the newsgroups deserve to be quoted on line with other lab rumors you get say over the watercooler or the coffee pot ...
