This is exactly what I was going to ask. I (female) had a similar
problem and it turns out to be a recurring fungal problem. Not curable,
definately treatable. They may want to do some sort of biopsy (not
pleasant) but at least it'll possibly get you an answer.
Meanwhile - DON'T SCRATCH! It may be hard not to... but don't.
