Discovered in 1989, the hepatitis C virus is a serious and chronic viral
liver illness that has been estimated to infect at least half a million
Britons, with 85,000 known sufferers. The implications of this major health
problems have been largely ignored - on a National level it has not been
managed satisfactorily and on a personal level is has not been treated
effectively. There is also an overwhelming lack of information and
awareness. It is hoped that this self-help book for sufferers and carers,
written by a hepatitis C sufferer and a distinguished liver specialist,
will help to bring hepatitis C a greater degree of recognition and
understanding. Significantly, the British Liver Trust is coordinating a
liver awareness week focusing on viral hepatitis from 12-19 April 1997.
