Several factors allow the mother to support an ABO incompatible fetus,
but the major factor is probably that ABO antibodies are almost
exclusively IgM, which don't cross the placenta.  The exception is a
strange antibody called anti-A, anti-B, which is IgG and occasionally
causes positive Coomb's tests in babies born to type O mothers.
