Well, You have definitely chosen a tough project. The Eradication of
Cholera is no easy task. Cholera's pathology is dictated from the
prevalence of its microbial presence. It is very well known that Cholera
outbreaks can easily cause epidemics, but it is less known that this
condition has become pandemic 7 times since recorded history, and is
currently circling the world for its eighth time. While vaccines have been
under research they are offer only varying results. Cholera is endemic in
India, it's point of origin, and can be extremely widespread in this
country. As you may know India is an underdeveloped country, and has widely
poor sanitation. As Cholera is transmitted by the fecal-oral route, and
control by sanitation is effective but not feasible in these endemic areas.
While vaccines to the Cholera toxin have been experimented with, long term
results and reliability, not to mention economics have been a problem.
Unfortunately, I don't have too many references for you to look up, but
any Medical Microbiology text should cover cholera and other pathogenic
vibrios.
Hope that helps.
