FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Cambridge Healthtech Institute's First International
Microbial-Linked Diseases: Shifting the Pathogenic Paradigm
June 25-26, 1998 Westin Horton Plaza San Diego, CA

Sensitive new diagnostic tools and observant microbiologists are
increasingly identifying diseases for which infectious agents play a
role in causation or exacerbation. These are diseases such as cancer,
autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular conditions which are
traditionally not envisioned as transmittable. The discovery that
infectious agents are involved can have a dramatic impact on the
understanding, diagnosis and treatment of patients with these
diseases. Researchers involved with pathogenesis, virulence factors,
host susceptibility or resistance, immune mechanisms, identification,
cloning and sequencing research, genetic studies, viruses, prokaryotic
organisms and protozoa are encouraged to submit a brief description
detailing their work (approaches) for consideration of presentation.
Also, we would most appreciate your suggestions of colleagues or other
people you would like to hear, who might be suitable/interested in
speaking and what types of research/approaches they are currently
involved in.

SESSION TOPICS PROPOSED:

Pathogens:
H. Pylori link to stomach cancers
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer, Genital Warts and
other STDs
Herpesvirus link to MS (HHV-6)
Chlamydia and Cardiovascular diseases (i.e. Atherosclerosis)
HHV-8 link to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)and cytokine receptor genes
and Kaposi's sarcoma
EBV link with Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Endogenous retroviruses as pathogenic catalysts for disease
Molecular Mimicry-structural homologies between a self protein and a
viral or bacterial protein
CMV-linked arterial plaque formation
Mycoplasma as a proposed causative agent of RA

Diagnostic Markers:
Defensive vs. 'Memory' Antibodies as pathogenic markers

Therapeutic and Vaccine Development:
H. Pylori vaccine development
HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16 and HPV-18

Deadline for Submission is February 20, 1998.
