Faudsters In Medicine, Never!

"There were fraudsters in every sphere of life. There is no reason
why medicine should be any different, even though in the past
no one would have dared to think such a thing of the profession.
"If you are an academic you have to publish papers if you want
to may any progress in your career. If you don't publish you get
nowhere."
( Richard Smith, editor of the British Medical Journal, reported
 in the Times 5/6/98)

I have no idea why he said " were ", I assume it was a typing error,
because time does not alter human nature any? As to publishing
to get places, what a potty notion, where has he got such an idea
from?
A system that worked like that wouldn't be a fair system, would it?
Surely real doctoring comes from testimony of patients, evidence of
successful work and colleagues, not just a published paper?
Correct me if I'm wrong of course, I'd love to hear why I'm wrong
and the justification for it :o)
