POSTING:

SEVENTEENTH SUMMER SYMPOSIUM IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Immune-Neuro-Endocrine Interactions

JULY 2931, 1998

THE PENN STATER CONFERENCE CENTER HOTEL
STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA

The goal of the Seventeenth Summer Symposium in Molecular Biology is to
present a forum for discussing the most up-to-date research on the
cellular and molecular mechanisms that mediate communication among
nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. It has long been recognized that
intricate levels of communication exist among these three systems. This
communication is mediated by a variety of molecules‹including
neuropeptides, hormones, and cytokines‹through their ability to bind to
specific cell surface receptors. As a result, there is the potential to
control each of these systems through complex regulatory mechanisms. More
importantly, such control has been shown to affect the development and
progression of various disease states that are immunologically based. The
interdisciplinary nature of the study of neuroendocrine-immune
interactions has drawn the interest of researchers from a variety of
fields, including microbiology, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology,
physiology, psychology, and psychiatry, to name a few.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS and PLENARY LECTURE
The Seventeenth Summer Symposium in Molecular Biology will feature a
keynote address by David L. Felten, M.D., Ph.D., and a plenary lecture by
Esther M. Sternberg, M.D.
