Heat shock and Gene therapy

Hi!
Does anybody have any idea about the relationship between heat shock and
integration rate of foreign plasmid into host chromosome?

I performed a experiment several weeks ago, showing that heat shock at
42c after transfection can significantly increase integration rate by
1-3 fold in some tumor cell lines. But in some cell lines, the trend was
not shown.

Heat shock also seemed to increase gene expression. The results vary
from cell lines to cell lines and with change of H.S condition.

Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation for the theoretic basis of
the phenomenon above?

Thanks!!

Tony.
