S. pneumoniae, the pneumococcus, is one of the three most common
causes of inner ear infections in children. This is because many
individuals carry this bacteria as normal flora in their throats. it
is a short trip up the young eustachian tube to the inner ear, where
infection results.
If you have a truely resistant form of pneumococcus, the antibiotics
probably aren't doing anything for you except to suppress the other
normal flora in your throat which usually help to naturally control
the pneumococcal populations. Has your isolate been tested for
antibiotic sensitivity? A culture and sensitivity test is the thing
to get.
