I've eventually got round to addressing that question.

Note that the J. Immunology ref (previously quoted) actually accedes
that excessive apoptosis is the probable trigger for aggression.

There's another ref that appeared as a letter in Nature about 1988 (?
when) that supports the (quiet) apoptosis -> tolerance thesis.
