My sympathies for the bad health news...

Hypogammaglobulinemia means that your son doesn't make enough
gamma-globulins, which is the old term for immunoglobulins, which is
another word for antibodies.

This can result from a number of different problems, but the result is
that the low antibody levels make your son more susceptible to various
infections that would normally be prevented by the presence of antibodies.

If I remember right, some of the effects can be lessened by introducing
antibodies from donors.  This would have to be done repeatedly.
