As far as I know, MTT cannot be used to measure proliferation per se. It
measures viability (the conversion reaction requires functional
mitochondria, but does not require cell division). The MTT assay can
replace 3H-thymidine uptake for IL-2 measurement by CTLL cells, since IL-2
promotes both survival and proliferation in CTLL, but it isn't terribly
useful if there may be significant numbers of viable, but
non-proliferating, cells.
