Dear Sir or Madam:
I am seeking information about a canine autoimmune disease called
sebaceous adenitis with hyperkeratosis. Sebaceous glands become
inflamed, leading to hair loss, and the skin thickens and coursens. The
only treatment I'm aware of is palliative tar and sulfur shampoo with
warm baby oil. It reduces dryness and itching, but has no discernible
effect upon the progress of the disease. I have two questions: is there
any treatment which reduces hair loss or hyperkeratosis and, since this
is an autoimmune disease, why isn't steroid therapy (such as cortisone)
recommended?
