Graduate Research Position:


       The Influenza Sequence Database (http://www.flu.lanl.gov) will
have an opening for a GRA, beginning summer 2000. The position is for a
person who likes working in a team, and wants to learn bioinformatics in
a realistic setting. The database project has two major, research
thrusts: sequence analysis, to understand the molecular evolution of the
influenza virus; and epidemiological modeling using agent-based models.
Currently, there are five full-time members of the database team, and
two part-time GRAs. The influenza project is housed within the
Theoretical Biology and Biophysics group of the Theoretical Division at
Los Alamos National Laboratory. (See http://t10.lanl.gov for more

       Skills required: B.S. or M.S., including training in a biological
discipline (e.g., molecular biology, microbiology, immunology,
virology, genetics) and quantitative disciplines (especially
mathematics, probability and statistics). Must be good at literature
searches, with competent written and oral communication.

      Skills desired: Ability to program in Perl and/or C/C++;
familiarity with a Unix system or a PC under Linux.
