THere are probably others with better answers but
protein a is a bacterial cell wall (staph aureas) constituent that binds the
fc portion of immunoglobulin--this helps the bacteria avoid opsinization (i
think) i don't know the exact molecular interactions except i thinks its the
second constant domain on ab that proA binds to. I think protein g is either
a) a manufactured proA that is either better at binding fc or is more
selective--it may have been discovered in another bacteria but i seem to
recall proG being described as a deletion mutant of proA.
