Hi Dana,
We still rely on a HP4c (resp. newer model 6100c) flatbed scanner with
transparency adapter. They're robust, can stand unwrapped coomassie
gels etc. I got my private one on ebay, where they still are not cheap
as some people know about about their quality.
The actual drawback of it is that you need a SCSI connector on your
computer. It should work with all programs supporting the TWAIN
standard for image capture.
