A new one is P. M. Conn (ed): Neuroscience in Medicine.  J. B. 
Lippincott,Philadelphia, 1995. pp.xxiii + 660.  It's mostly not very "
medical", not asmassive as Kandel, S & J.  Perhaps a bit easier for 
beginners than Shepherd,though I've not read much of it yet.
