Benzodiazepines work by potentiating GABAergic synaptic transmission, so I
suppose the "endogenous benzodiazepine" would be GABA.

I agree about the effects of benzodiazepins on the GABA receptor complex, a 
potentiation. However, I strongly hesitate to consider GABA as "endogenous
benzodiazepine".
