NEURAL NETWORKS AND FUZZY SYSTEMS
Applications and Developments
SUMMARY
=======
Applications of Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems will immerse the student
in the most recent results in neural networks and fuzzy systems by reviewing
the fundamentals and then presenting applications in some of the most difficult
(and profitable) areas in computing today.
The technology areas that will be covered in this three day course include:
o forecasting and prediction
o signal and image processing
o control engineering
o communications
o sensor and data fusion
o diagnostics and prognostics
o information retrieval
The applications of the neural networks in these technology areas will be
described for:
o finance
o defense
o medicine
o dual-use
o environmental monitoring
The applications described will include a survey of existing software and
hardware, descriptions of work in other countries (such as Japan, Europe,
and Australia), and comparisons with existing techniques. This review will
provide those attending with a complete snap-shot of the state-of-the-art
in practical aspects of neural networks and fuzzy systems.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
=================
Applications of Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems serves those individuals
who want to know what neural networks and fuzzy systems are and how they
can be applied. This course distributes product information and explains
what products and services are currently available. Each course distributes
a copy of a book that provides a broad overview of neural networks and
their applications, survey papers that provide succinct overviews of
application areas, case study papers on focused applications, and copies
of software that will allow those who attend to immediately begin building
their applications. Software demonstrations will be provided in the class.
COURSE OUTLINE
==============
Applications of Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems is presented in three
parts that span three intensive, but enjoyable, days. Neural Networks
are first individually described in parts one and two, respectively. In
part three, hybrid fuzzy neural systems are described. The presentation
weaves foundations with current case-study applications in a way that
provides a great deal of interaction between the students and the instructor.
Part One: Neural Networks
o A broad Overview of Neural Networks. What are neural networks? Why are
they so appealing? What can they do? What can't they do? What are the
key challenges that remain to be solved?
o Neural Network Paradigms. The fundamental components and nomenclature.
o Neural Network Design Methodology. A sequence of design steps is
presented that allows the engineer or scientist to easily apply neural
networks.
o Neural Network Complexity Analysis. Trade-offs are examined, such as:
size vs. speed, training time vs. run-time, and generalization vs.
memorization.
o Real-World Applications. Applications of neural networks to control,
communications, signal classification, and forecasting will be presented
in areas that include finance, telecommunications, medicine, environmental
monitoring, and dual-use defense.
o Softare and Hardware Review. A review of currently available software and
hardware that includes manufacturers' literature and demonstrations.
Part Two: Fuzzy Systems
o Introduction to Fuzzy Systems. Answers to fundamental questions, including:
What is a fuzzy system? Why use a fuzzy approach? How is fuzzy different
from probability? What are the remaining challenges in fuzzy systems?
o Fuzzy Control Systems. An introduction to fuzzy control with a step-by-
step construction of a controller.
o Fuzzy Pattern Recognition. What is the difference between crisp knowledge
and fuzzy knowledge? How are rules combined?
o Applications. Commercial product applications such as autofocusing cameras,
character recognition, medical image segmentation, and information
retrieval.
o Software and Hardware Review. A review of currently available software and
hardware that includes manufacturers literature and demonstrations.
Part Three: Fuzzy Neural Systems
o Methods of Synergistically Combining Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems.
Neural netowrk and fuzzy systems are combined to provide more capable
solutions than either approch does independantly.
o Applications. Applications of fuzzy neural systems in control, pattern
recognition, and data fusion are presented for robotics and medicine.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
====================
Patrick K. Simpson has been teaching neural network and fuzzy systems
courses since 1988. As an application engineer, Mr. Simpson has applied
neural networks in condition-based diagnostics and prognostics, medical
signal and image processing, sonar and radar signal classification, and
speech processing.
Mr. Simpson holds two patents, he is the President of IEEE Neural Networks
Council, he has written a book that has been used in Neural Networks courses
across the United States, he has written several archival papers in areas
that include neural networks and their synergism with fuzzy systems, and
he is cited in several Who's Who anthologies.
Mr. Simpson is an editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and
the Australian Journal of Intelligent Information Processing Systems, he
recently edited a two-volume set of books entitled Neural Networks: Theory
and Technology, he has served on several program committees for conferences
on neural networks, fuzzy systems, and financial engineering, and he is
the General Chairman of the IEEE World Congress on Computational
Intelligence.
