As mentioned by Dr. Nishi previously, if you use water it works fine. We
have always used high quality water (milliQ) and allowed the plate to dry.
This avoids introducing the toxicity of borate at all. The key is to find a
culture dish supply which supports growth of neurons (this may be a function
of coating efficiency). Falcon Primeria (spelling?) and Nunc "Delta"
series of dishes are both good.
