Brian,
Elmer Green is a pioneer in the area of biofeedback and consciousness
research. He has a Ph.D. from University oif Chicago He also has degrees
in Physics. He, along with Joe Kamiya and Joel Lubar, was a student in
Kleitman and Dement's famous sleep lab during the 60's. His research was
all done at The Menninger Clinic and he is the originator of the
biofeedback protocol for inducing hypnagogic states with alpha/theta
brainwave biofeedback. His most recent work is in mapping the
electro-energey fields and processes from the ungrounded human body. He
has discovered sex differences and differences in exceptional individuals.
Barry Sterman is an anatomy and physiology professor and researcher at
UCLA and he heads a neuropsychology research lab at Sepulveda V.A. His
primary work has been the demostration of a operant learning model for the
treatment of epilepsy. He first demonstrated the procedure in cats then
in controlled research studies with humans. His is regarded as some of
the most rigorous science in the field of biofeedback. He is currently
studying EEG human factors associated with pilot error in military jet
pilots.
Dale Walters was the training director for the Menninger Center for
Applied Psychology for years and was a protege of Elmer Green. His Ph.D.
is from Kansas State. He worked with Elmer during the developing years of
Elmer and Alyce Green's research careers and he co-published with them on
a number of articles.
Joel Lubar is a professor at U. Tenn at Knoxville where he does research
on applications of EEG biofeedback to the treatment of ADHD. He has
published a replication of Sterman's work and completed a post doc in
Sterman's lab. The primary criticism he receives is that his ADHD work
has all been case study design. He has his Ph.D. from U. Chicago.
Michael Tansey is a Ph.D. from The California School of Professional
Psychology whos enjoys a clinical practice in New Jersey. He has
originated a number of innovative clinical techniques and has published
his casework widely. He recently published an empirical paper with Ken
Tachiki in the International Journal of Neuroscience. He appears to be an
intuitive and comes up with some very insightful discoveries. His most
prominent is the use of 1 htz bandwidths in the EEG to map the topography
of consciousness.
Eugene Peniston is a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, I believe, and he
works as a chief psychologist at the Bonham Texas V.A. He originated aan
EEG biofeedback protocol for Alcoholism and PTSD which has been
prolifereated in the biofeedback community. His research showed an 80%
recovery rate, but his studies are not very large and application of his
techniques have not faired well in outpatient clinical practice. Not
because they do not work; but because theyr equire a great deal of skill
to master, in my opinion.
Jim Hardt is a student of Joe Kamiya who is widely published in the area
of Alpha EEG biofedback. His research was part of that that launched the
"alpha craze" of the 60's and 70's.
I have referred to Len Ochs in other postings. My fingers are getting
tired.
