Approximately 5-6 years ago an article appeared in BBS (Behavioral and
Brain Sciences)  which compared the cetacean brain to other mammalian
brains.  It was titled something to the effect of:  The cetacean brain and
the original/stem brain hypothesis.  That article and the attendant
commentaries published in the same issue should give you a good start into
the literature, controversies, and those researchers active in this area.
