I'd like to mention that there is a very nice and elegant explanation
(although speculative) provided by Senor Santiago Ramon y Cajal (him, again...
it's annoying to see how many times he has been right). I don't have the book
in the lab right now, so I cannot quote his anwer. Anyway, you could consult
"Histologie du systeme nerveux (de l'homme et des vertebres)", or its recent
english translation. I believe the section I refer to is in Vol.2, where he
describes the visual system.
