I would run a search on the following data bases to see what is known:
Medline (Grateful Med) and/or Biosis. You might try linking the words
reticular activating system and sleep. I would guess that
twitching/jerking stem from partial inhibition of the RAS during the
transition from wakefulness to sleep (i.e., a temporary reversal of
inhibition).
