I heard a rumor that caffeine can lower serotonin levels. Can anyone
confirm this, and/or provide references? I know that caffeine's
believed mechanism of action is as an adenosine receptor antagonist,
but like all psychoactive drugs, it can potentially affect any
neurotransmitter system, directly or indirectly.
The only reference I have is from 1992 brain research reviews;
the authors state that there is some evidence that caffeine
reduces serotonin availability in the synaptic cleft.
Any help is appreciated.
