thinks he froze to death

I am trying to help an Australian friend get information on a story he
read in an Australian book, which supposedly took place in America a few
years ago.

A man accidentally locked himself in a freezer car of a train on a Friday
afternoon. Knowing that he wouldn't be found until Monday, he decided to
chronicle what he thought would be his death by freezing. He had a pen and
he noted the changes his body went through, his thought processes, etc.
When his coworkers returned on Monday and opened the train car, they found
him dead and his documentation written on the walls of the car. However,
the freezer had NEVER BEEN TURNED ON. The temp inside the car was 56
degrees. Yet he thought the freezer was on and that he was going to freeze
to death...and he did.

Has anyone ever heard this story? If so, could you tell me when and where
it may have happened so that I can do a search of newspapers to get more
details? Thanks very much. Ellen
